Tembea Kenya, Giraffe Center Experience

What if today was your last day on earth, what would be your main regret? Personally I think I will be more disappointed by the things I did not do while I had the chance. When I was exploring this question I realized my life had become a routine and somehow boring. I felt ashamed that I had not taken any initiative to travel, explore and adventure the beauty around. Isn’t the purpose of life to live it, taste it, and experience it to the utmost? I have never agreed more with St Augustine that the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.

I have challenged myself to travel and explore at least one or two destinations in a month though that’s not the limit, if I get a chance to more destinations the merrier. According to Andre Gide, man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore. For me the shore defines the beautiful destinations that surround my country Kenya. Kenya is known for her beautiful sceneries, rich culture, wild animals, mountains, white sandy beaches, name it. It is such a shame that tourists travel thousands of miles just to experience the beauty of our country, yet people like Wanjiru who claim to be patriots never go a mile to experience the beauty and serenity our country offers.

For those of you in the same page as I, cost is not an excuse, I realized some of these destinations are cost friendly especially for locals. I set my first destination to the Giraffe Center Nairobi. Approximately twenty kilometers away from Nairobi city Center lies the Giraffe center in Karen . You can opt to use public means of transport but if you are fortunate enough you can drive .On a mission to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe species that is found only in the grasslands of East Africa the giraffe center was established. The center is also home to several warthogs which you will see on your visit there.

I was ecstatic at the sight of these beautiful creatures. I channeled my inner child through playing, feeding, patting and even kiss one of them. The kissing part was so weird though. This was the closest I have encountered any wild animal. At first I was terrified but as I progressed I got used to it. it was not as hard as I had thought after all. That was not all, I also got to enjoy their Nature Sanctuary. I think this was the epic of my destination. I could feel the nature embracing me in a big warm welcome. I enjoyed the earthy smell as it ran through my nose in and out. For a moment in my life I connected with nature. I Inhaled the fresh air and continued on delighting in the sound of my feet sliding through the leaves. I could hear the beautiful sounds of birds singing, squirrels chattering, mysterious sounds of insects humming and lizards scrabbling on tree barks. Different species of trees danced to the rhythm of the whistling wind as sunlight splashed through branches.

The tranquility and serene views of the Nature Sanctuary dropped my cares like leaves during autumn. Just when I thought that was all, I heard from a short distance the sound of water trickling between rocks, I was thrilled yet excited as I headed that direction to discover the calmest river. The water was crystal clear and glittered invitingly. I had no choice but to remove my boots and experience the freshness and life it offered. The river flowed down forming a small waterfall…. oh yes a waterfall, it was drizzling into the rocks and forming a beautiful serenity pool at the bottom. That was a lifetime experience. At a damage fee of only Ksh .250/=.I still can’t stop fantasizing about the Nature sanctuary at the Giraffe center. What else does nature have in store for me,I wonder? I look forward to my next adventure in a different destination. I can’t wait to experience and share more with you. The Giraffe center is definitely a place I would recommend to anyone at anytime.Feel free to share with me your adventure experiences or even suggest and recommend places I should explore.Till my next adventure…………

Shame, shame, shame!! Look at those kids behind you, may I remind you that they are in primary school which is when normal people go to Giraffe center, however it is never too late and this is definitely the beginning of great adventures which I can’t wait to read here sooner than later. That romper, the hat and those !boots scream tourist galore!!
